BMW OEM

Evaluation date
August 1999

This filter was one of two filters generously donated to the cause by Josh Fielek. Thanks!

Externally, the BMW feels solid. It has a less desirable square-section sealing gasket, held in place by six crimps, but otherwise looks good. Internally, the filter construction is fairly commonplace, with rolled metal endcaps and an integral bypass valve. There is no anti-drainback valve at the front of the filter, nor any sealing rubber at the front of the element. BMW mounts the filter hanging down off the engine, so an anti-drainback valve is unnecessary. The front seal appears to be formed with a metal protrusion at the front of the filter designed to deform slightly at assembly. I could clearly see where the filter element had sealed all the way around the front inlet.

Update: I have been informed by Karl Parr that BMW uses a 14 facet base, instead of the 15 facet that the aftermarket uses. This means that standard cup-type oil filter wrenches will not fit the BMW.
